REPOST: T.M.F.Y.T.T.F.T.: Pick Of The Year 2003

The Government's wrong!Originally posted on The Unpleasant Lair Of Spank The Monkey 08/01/2004

No introductions necessary by now, I think. Every Christmas for the last few years, I've lashed together a CD compilation of my favourite songs of the year. This is the one for 2003. If the song titles listed below look like links, then you can click on them to hear Real Audio samples: if they don't, that means I've taken those samples off the site to save space. Got that? Good. Here we go, then.

In the fine tradition of 1998's Damn Your Black Heart Barbra Streisand, 1999's Dance A Dickless Jig, 2000's Cheap Sex & Sad Films, and half a dozen or so cassette compilations that only myself and Lou know about... here's my selection of the best songs of 2001, compiled as usual onto a CD-R and handed out as a cheap Christmas present.

You know how these things work by now, surely? Since 1993, Spank's Pal Lou has been getting the same Christmas present from me every year: a compilation of my favourite songs from the previous twelve months. And since 1998, I've been sharing details of the contents of those compilations with you lot (check out the pages for 1998's Damn Your Black Heart, Barbra Streisand and 1999's Dance A Dickless Jig if you weren't previously aware of this).

REPOST: Damn Your Black Heart, Barbra Streisand: Pick Of The Year 1998

Sleeve art from Damn Your Black Heart, Barbra Streisand Originally posted on The Unpleasant Lair Of Spank The Monkey 11/01/1999. First in a series of reposts looking back at my Pick Of The Year compilation CDs, leading up to the inevitable 2006 edition.

If you're going to blame anyone, blame Louis. One-time work colleague, long-time drinking buddy and occasional contributor to the letters page, Lou started it all during a pub argument about five years ago when he claimed there was no decent pop music out there any more.

Bearing in mind that this was 1993, he may well have had a point: nevertheless, I insisted that the good stuff was still being made, it just took a little more effort to track down than it used to.

"Prove it," he said.

Simian Substitute Site for December 2006: Happy Monkey Christmas Card

Let's Tree With Happy Monkey After October's posting frenzy, it was inevitable that things would slow down a little here in November, particularly when you factor in a satisfyingly busy period in my New Moderately Responsible Job In The Computer Industry. But that's not to say that I haven't been artistically active as well. Aside from Faust, which you already know about, the other cultural highlight of the month has been the NFT's Wild Japan: Outlaw Masters movie season - expect to see a report on that here fairly soon. (If you live in Edinburgh, you can see the season at the Filmhouse right now, with appearances in other cities to follow.)
